Dal Writes Worldbuilding: Editing Our First Drafts

We’ve written our drafts and now it’s time to make them great! Join Dal Writes to learn how to edit someone’s work while being respectful of the time and energy they put into it.

About the Event:

Editing can be the hardest part of writing, but without question, it is the difference between a good piece and a great piece. Before this session, we will have written drafts of our short stories that are set in our world. This is the time for us to present our work to each other, provide critical feedback, and to send each other off for revisions. Don’t worry! We know this is a vulnerable part of the writing process so we’ve come up with strategies to ensure that feedback is helpful and not harmful.

By doing peer editing, we are taking advantage of the fact that we can’t always see our work with pure objectivity. By the end of this, we hope that you will be able to iron out any inconsistencies with our created world and also feel inspired to create the best work possible. After making final edits, the only thing to do is submit and launch our book!

About Dal Writes:

Dal Writes is a society for creative writers that focuses on elements of science fiction and fantasy. Our emphasis is on worldbuilding techniques: the strategies and methods of creating a universe that isn’t our own. We believe that storytelling is a skill that anybody can develop – and it is a skill that is central to many professions outside of creative writing. Game development and digital animation are just two examples of professions that require great storytelling. Join us this term to help create an anthology of short stories that all take place in one universe. We’re tackling the writing process from start to finish – including our very own book launch!

Dal Writes Worldbuilding: Revision and Character Development

Let’s fix our world and put some people in it! This week, Dal Writes is making some final tweaks to our universe and developing a rich history of the people who have shaped it into what our world is today.

About the Event:

Our world is built, tested, and broken. Great! We will break this session into two components. First, we will come up with solutions for any problems we discovered with how our world works from last week. Second, we will begin to create the characters who live in our world. These won’t necessarily be the characters whose stories we tell. Instead these might be important families living in cities, famous tyrants ruling a kingdom, or heroes who have completed fantastical deeds. This is the final step before we will actually write our anthology.

Dal Writes Worldbuilding – Screen-Testing with Dice!

Play a D&D-Style RPG with us! This week, Dal Writes is interactively ironing out the details of our universe by playing games!

About the Event:

We’ve created our world and designed a system – now it’s time to break it! Geoffrey Mason is coming in this week to help us iron out any problems we might not have considered before. At this session, we will take turns holding the reigns on a roleplaying adventure set in our world. The goal for the characters: Get from Point A to Point B. The goal of the Dungeon Master: Make it difficult for the characters to get there.

If you’ve never played a dice-RPG, fear not! Geoffrey will be teaching us the basics and we’re not getting into the details of Dungeons and Dragons. The only pre-requisites for this session will be to have a general idea for a character in this world with whom you’d like to take on an adventure. Our goal will be for you to ask the tough questions about our world (e.g., if my character can summon an infinite number of bears, what would happen if they did summon an infinite number of bears?). By the end of this session, we will have an idea of what works and what doesn’t work in our universe. Now the editing can begin!

POSTPONED – Dal Writes Worldbuilding Session: Developing the Specifics

Join Dal Writes in further developing the world in which our anthology will take place! Now that we’ve built our universe, it’s time to ask some more specific questions.

Note: This session has been postponed due to instructor illness. Please contact the Dal Writes Society directly for more information.

About the Event

By this point, we’ve created a universe for our stories to take place in, but Rome wasn’t built in a day! At this meeting, we will continue to build upon our world and hone-in on the cities, systems, and cultures that we have created. Expect this meeting to be much more specific than the last.

At the end of this meeting, we will have developed a region of our world with depth, an agreed-upon system for how the world works, and a general knowledge of its history. We’re one step closer to being ready to start writing!

Dal Writes Worldbuilding Session: Creating Our Universe

Dal Writes is building an anthology of short stories set in one world! Join us for our first session of the term as we begin to build our universe!

About the Event:

Dal Writes is publishing an anthology of short stories this term! At our first meeting, we will be collectively building one world to set the stage for where our stories will be taking place. Expect to draw maps, design cities, create a world history, various cultures, and more! No need to bring the supplies – just bring your creativity!

With the goal of launching our anthology toward the end of the semester at the Halifax Central Library, it will also be important to discuss our schedules for the term and come up with an agreed upon set of deadlines for the project. If you want your voice to be heard and to participate in publishing your story this term, attendance is strongly encouraged!

NaNoWriMo Kickoff!

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a worldwide event where authors try to write 50,000 words in 30 days during the month of November (For more information, check out https://nanowrimo.org/). It’s an ambitious task and Dal Writes is going to try and take it on!

For the first day of November, we are hosting our NaNoWriMo kickoff! To get our creativity mindsets in gear, we have planned several “mini-workshops” for character building, story plotting, and (of course) worldbuilding!

Bring your ideas, a laptop to type with (or a notebook if that’s your style), and be ready for a fast-paced, exciting evening!

Screentesting Your World Through Roleplaying with Geoffrey Mason

In this workshop, we will be creating a roleplaying game to test out the logistics of what it means to live in a world that isn’t quite like our own.

Geoffrey Mason will be teaching us how to create a dice-based roleplaying game that takes place in the worlds we created in the previous workshop.

Don’t worry about having any Dungeons and Dragons experience – the game rules will be approachable for anyone. The only thing to expect is that with storytelling, nothing ever goes as expected!

Worldbuilding with Dr. Jenny Baechler

The first workshop of the term will be a comprehensive introduction to worldbuilding. We’ll start with a discussion of different kinds of science fiction and fantasy writing, following up with the creation of an entire world… from scratch!

Worldbuilding is the creation of a fictional that is not like our own. Expect to learn about how the work that goes on behind the scenes of creative writing is what really brings our final stories to life.

Introduction to Dal Writes

Our first meeting will be an informal introduction to the Dal Writes Society. We will introduce the talks and workshops that will be offered during the term as well as some of the events that the society will be taking part in. On top of that, everybody will have a chance to introduce themselves through a few mini challenges we have planned to get us in the headspace of worldbuilding and creative writing.

No previous experience or knowledge is required! Just bring your creativity and energy. We’ll bring the rest!
